Birthstones

Gemstones have been traditionally associated with the months of the year and with signs of the zodiac. Finding the origins of birthstones in Western culture has proven difficult; the concept probably dates to classical Greek times and before, though associations have changed over the centuries. Listed below are stones currently associated with the months of the year, along with other stones that have been associated with those months. Some are recent additions, including synthetic stones to make expensive birthstones more affordable. After all, not everyone born in April has money to burn on diamonds. The "mystical" stones arise from Tibetan traditions, and provide yet another alternative for choosing a birthstone to wear.

Associations between stones and zodiac signs pre-date the traditional birthstones of the month, as the twelve-month calendar was an invention of Roman times. In the second table below are the stones associated with each zodiac sign and the related planets.

These tables are a compillation of multiple sources, including information from the American National Association of Jewelers, so may vary from other individual tables that you find, as different tables sometimes list different "official" birthstones for the zodiac signs. Given here are all the various stones ascribed to the zodiac signs in the sources consulted. Every person has many different birthstones to choose from, so go ahead and pick your favorite!
